Stereophonics, Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle

STANDING the test of time is something a lot of bands fail to do, but not Welsh rockers Stereophonics.

Their latest album, Keep Calm And Carry On, shows why they have succeeded where others fail.

Taking its name from a Second World War propaganda poster, it has a completely different sound to what 'Phonics fans are used to.

It is filled with more upbeat tunes with a bluesy feel – all of which went down well at the Metro Radio Arena.

New songs such as She's Alright and Innocent are a stark contrast to some of the Stereophonics' earlier music.

Not as deep and grungy, the tunes have a more summery feel, but singer Kelly Jones's raspy tone is still prominent.

Although the band's seventh album has come under heavy criticism, with some critics claiming it lacks passion, it certainly didn't seem that way with the fans.

The atmosphere in the Arena was electric, with everyone on their feet singing along to songs sold and new.

The crowd was a real mixture, from young teens to older rockers, showing that Stereophonics have a broad range of followers – even the little lad sitting on the railings was waving his hands in the air.

When they launched into the classics Dakota and Maybe Tomorrow the whole place lifted and everyone went wild.

A solo performance by guitarist Adam Zindani was also a highlight of the night, showing that Jones is by no means a one-man band.

It was a top night which was enjoyed by all, and the crowd were still singing as they left the Arena.
