Review: The Suggestibles, The Stand, Newcastle
Newcastle-based comedy improv group The Suggestibles
THE great thing about improv is that it puts everyone in the same boat - neither the comics nor audience have any idea what’s going to happen.
But despite having no script or plans of action, The Suggestibles managed to turn around an hour-and-a-half of comedy gold.
The Newcastle-based improv group used audience suggestions to act out scenes and sketches, simply making it all up as they went along.
The five-piece were astoundingly impressive, becoming a different character, changing their accent, and even the genre their scene was taking place in at the drop of a hat.
They used different methods to act out their scenes, like dubbing each other’s voices and reading out lines that the audience had written down, creating hilariously random scenes that probably couldn’t be written by the most obscure thinker.
And their abilities to think on their feet and remember the details of each individual story and character were awe-inspiring.
The group ended the show with a musical, Aspects of Nightshift, as suggested to them by an audience member.
One took charge of the keyboard to provide the music to which the actors had to play out their show.
With a rather ridiculous concept and no time to discuss a storyline, characters or style of music, The Suggestibles turned around the most hilarious sketch I’ve ever seen.
With songs about shearing sheep, finding love on a radio show, and a number sung by nightshift worker ‘Charlotte’ - really a man with a T-shirt over his head - I barely had time to wipe away my tears of laughter before more came.
The Suggestibles are back at The Stand in High Bridge, Newcastle, on March 5 and I highly recommend you see them.
There’s no doubt that a night of belly-laughing, side-holding, and tear-wiping is in store if you do.
