THE stars of a major musical production in South Tyneside have been juggling with some new skills.

Cast members from South Shields Gilbert and Sullivan Society are putting on a production of Seussical The Musical have been learning circus tricks like juggling, spinning plates, and riding a unicycle for show.

Brian Jordan, who plays the lead role of the Cat In The Hat, has been taking part in circus skills workshops with Marty Bloomfield, who runs Sunderland-based Circurama.

Director Gareth Hunter, from South Shields, said: “We wanted the show to really have that fun feeling, and it’s really energetic.

“The cast have had a really good time taking part in the workshops. It’s been a right laugh.

“Brian is still getting the hang of the unicycle, and plate spinning is a lot harder than it looks. It’s a good job we used plastic ones.

“Marty would come in to the workshops and show everyone the tricks and make it look so easy.” The show, which starts at the Customs House in Mill Dam, South Shields, on Tuesday, February 14, is based on the most popular books by children’s author Dr Seuss.

The Broadway show, which uses only songs to tell the story, is based mainly on Horton Hears A Who, but also features famous characters such as The Grinch.

Gareth, 32, added: “Brian has been learning some magic tricks as well, and we’re hoping that during the interval he might go out into the audience and do card tricks and some close-up magic.

“We’re also planning a big surprise for the show, but I don’t want to give too much about that away just yet.

“The show is going to be really fun, though, and it just doesn’t stop. It’s really fast-paced the whole way through.”

Seussical The Musical runs from February 14 to 18. Tickets cost £13 with an £11 concession, or a family ticket for £42 will admit two adults and two children. Call 454 1234 to book.
