Stars to bring all that jazz
Salute to Satchmo ... Rico Tomasso.
A HOST of internationally-acclaimed jazz performers are set to grace South Tyneside’s premier entertainment venue later this year.
The Customs House has just announced the performers for its latest jazz season, and bosses say the line-up will have fans excited.
The programme will begin with A Salute To Satchmo on Friday, September 23, paying tribute to the legendary Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong, one of the most revered figures in jazz history.
It will be performed by the renowned jazz trumpeter Rico Tomasso and a five-piece group featuring some of London’s finest jazz musicians.
Armstrong is most famous for his smash hit success recordings such as Mack The Knife and Hello, Dolly – the latter knocking the Beatles off the UK No1 spot in 1964.
Award-winning vocalist Sarah Ellen Hughes will take to the stage on Friday, October 21, to promote her new album The Story So Far.
Despite only being in her 20s, she has already gained international recognition, winning the 2010 International Jazz Singing Competition Jazz Voices. She will perform a range of popular standards from Gershwin and Jobim to Burt Bacharach and Jimi Hendrix, along with exciting arrangements of some of her own compositions. The Tim Kliphuis Quartet make a highly anticipated debut at the Customs House, in Mill Dam, South Shields, on Saturday, November 19.
The Dutch violin virtuoso will play his exhilarating style of gypsy jazz, based on the legacy of French master Stéphane Grappelli.
Tim will be accompanied by the outstanding Keith Stephen and Roly Veitch (guitars) and Bruce Rollo (double bass).
The season is rounded off by A Jazz Christmas Party on Friday, December 16, featuring The Trinity All Stars.
The sextet features the clarinet and sax work of the renowned former leader of the Savannah Syncopators, Steve Andrews, and the virtuoso guitar and banjo playing of Keith Stephen.
They will be supported by some of the best local traditional jazz talent, including Caroline Irwin and Fred Thompson.
Customs House marketing and programming manager, Tim Flood, said: “Over the last 18 months, we have worked hard to programme jazz on a regular basis, and have seen it become a successful element of our events calendar.
“I am delighted with the four acts that we have performing, and hope to continue growing our reputation as a great place to see jazz in the North East.”
