Review: The Full Monty, Sunderland Empire
THERE’S no doubt about it, The Full Monty is hot stuff.
The show, by Sunderland Amateur Operatic Society, is a triumph, with knee-slapping jokes, great songs and even romance.
This performance is an Americanised version of the hit British film and tells of Buffalo steel workers who decide to give stripping a try when their factory closes down.
As they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. Ringleader Jerry (South Shields man Brian Jordan) was hilarious and made a great team with Dave (Samuel Johnson).
Songs like Big-Ass Rock, when the pair come up with suggestions to help Malcolm (Graeme Smith) commit suicide after saving him from that fate, and Big Black Man, sung by Horse (Leon Gill), had the audience in fits of laughter.
But the show-stealing number is Smith’s rendition of You Walk With Me. He sang it beautifully, the audience in a stunned silence.
Both the audition scene, when the group attempt to sign up more strippers, and the rehearsal scenes were hilarious as each of the men tried to master the pelvic thrust and sexy dance moves.
A great girls’ night out – but men shouldn’t let that put them off. This is a show that has something for everyone.
It runs until Saturday.
