Review: The Vagina Monologues, Theatre Royal, Newcastle
Anne Charleston... best known as Madge in Neighbours, is starring in The Vagina Monologues.
IT was ladies’ night at the Theatre Royal as The Vagina Monologues came to town.
The show has a sort of Loose Women feel to it, with the stars lined up on high stools.
Anne Charleston (Madge from Neighbours), comic Mel Giedroyc and Emmerdale’s Hayley Tamaddon performed short readings and shared facts about – you guessed it, the vagina – in the episodic play by Eve Ensler.
The show is a real celebration of what women are all about, giving a voice to the normally-unmentionable things about being female.
Ensler wrote it after interviewing 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence, with each one relating to the vagina in some way.
The actors had a brilliant chemistry and bounced off each other, shocking the crowd and making them shriek with laughter.
The show is not for the faint-hearted and could cause offence among more reserved members of the public.
I’m not easily-offended, but cringed when ‘Madge’ used the kind of language you’d expect in a Quentin Tarantino movie.
