TYNE Tunnel bosses have put a Jarrow writers’ group on the right road to creative success.

Tunnel concessionaire TT2 paid for the printing costs of a new booklet by Arts Advance, called Write Up Your Street.

Illustrated with many new and archive photographs, the publication traces the stories behind street names across the borough.

Already selling well, the booklet contains contributions from several Arts Advance members, including founder Barry Hall.

Mr Hall, of Jarrow, said: “Arts Advance is celebrating its 10th anniversary and so we were delighted when TT2 agreed to sponsor our latest publication.

“The support of Tyne Tunnel officials means we can keep our costs down and continue running our creative writing class, which meets fortnightly at Hedworthfield CA, Jarrow.

“Write Up Your Street is a new version of a booklet we did a few years ago and I’m pleased to say we’ve already sold quite a few copies of the 500 print-run.”

With technical help from Arts Advance members Michael Scullion and Ian Larmont, the book is an attractive treasure trove of local history.

For example, some people living in Nevinson Avenue, Whiteleas, South Shields, may be unaware, until reading Mr Hall’s detailed contribution, that the street takes its name from noted British painter Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, who was influenced by the Futurists and Cubists, and later met Picasso and Matisse while living in Paris.

Local photographer Alan White, who provides the booklet’s cover shot, also traces the historical origins of numerous street names in the borough, including Mile End Road, South Shields, which still raises as many questions as answers.

Write Up Your Street, which was officially launched at Jarrow Library at the weekend, is the kind of publication which will spark dozens of local debates. The booklet costs £3.99 and is available from local libraries and museums.

It is also available at Robinson’s book shop in the Grainger Market, Newcastle.
