Tunnel vision to screen in Europe
Tunnel location ... film-makers Nico and Yan Martin.
A FILM about a historic transport link in South Tyneside is set to hit the silver screen across Europe.
The Grade-II listed Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels, linking Jarrow and Howdon, last year marked its 60th anniversary with a series of celebrations.
This year, the unique transport feature will undergo a major overhaul, to boost numbers using the tunnels on foot and on two wheels.
Now the tunnels will have a starring role in a short film, which will be screened at festivals around Europe.
London-based film-makers Nico and Yan Martin travelled to South Tyneside for the three-day shoot, which ended at the weekend.
Called Dick Lorent, the film is described “a 12-minute-long psychological thriller,” and is set entirely in the cyclist tunnel.
Nico Martin said: “We had a very clear picture in our heads for the setting of our film.
“We researched possible locations and when we came across the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels on the web, they seemed to be exactly what we were looking for.
“We contacted the tunnels’ owners and came up to see the tunnels for ourselves.
“They were perfect for our needs.
“We are so grateful to the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) for giving us permission to make our film here.
“The tunnels will soon be featuring on cinema screens around Europe.”
The cyclist tunnel was closed for three consecutive nights to enable the film shoot to take place.
Paul Fenwick, project director for TWITA, said: “The tunnels are unique and provide an interesting setting for photographers and film-makers.
“We were delighted to allow Nico and Yan to film in the cyclist tunnel and wish them every success with it.”
