Have your say

You were certainly on the ball when it came to posting comments on Facebook following the publication of Stanhope Junior Girls’ School’ rounders team on the Gazette’s social media pages.

Caroline Edwardson posted: “The girls look so happy and healthy in comparison to my class in the 40s at Stanhope Road ‘Juniors’.

“I seem to remember that we relied on throwing ‘bean bags’ and walking along low benches.

Gayle Boardman said: “Wow is that Jen Ford, Jane Thompson, class photo that! How young!” While Julez Rutter urged Maria Rutter to “look who’s in the middle”.

Tracy Dron took to social media to say: “That’s me, it wasn’t 71 it was 1977,” something Michelle Howard agrees with when she says: “This wasn’t 1971” (it would seem that the date on the back of the photograph hasn’t worn very well over the years!)

And when it came to the teacher pictured, Clare Hannard was able to answer Vic Brotherton’s question which asked: “Is the teacher Miss Ford?”, saying it was “PE teacher Mrs Ford, something Tracie Crumbie concurred.

And there were more familiar faces, with Julie Craig pointing out: “Looks like Michelle Dring next to the teacher.”

Lynne Gateshill Jane Thompson posted: “Stanhope have always been winners,” while Julie Dennett asked Sheridan Saleh if she “can you spot your mam?”.

The picture showed: back (left to right) Elaine Wilkinson, Tracey Hall, Wendy Bell; centre (left to right) Ann Howell, Michelle Dring (captain), Mrs Jennifer Ford (teacher-coach), Karen Mews, Julie Davidson; front, Leah Foreman (left) and Kim Dalton.

Did you used to play in the school rounders team?

It was a great game to play in the school yard.

Meanwhile, even more of you took to social media to comment when we asked for your memories of Westoe Fete.

Lynn Laidler said: “I used to love helping out at the Westoe fete.

“I used to help out at the charity called cat concern. Had lovely times there.”

Pam Gowens recalled the line dancers, saying “they were so good and great that they were on twice”.

Lillian Weightman told how “My daughter had a craft table there ever year. Great day out”, while Wendy Keenleyside said: “Love Westoe Fete.

Happy memories.”

Another photo featured recently showed Ocean Road School, prompted Lynne Moulding (nee Guthrie) to get in touch.

She wrote: “Hi, seen your article in the Gazette about Ocean Road. I attended there. I think the year was 1969 as I recognise a few people in the photo who were in my class.

“The girl looking directly at the camera dark hair was Jackie Barker and the girl next to her was Linda Wyberg, hope this helps. Also recognise Dawn Scholfield and Denise Ryan,” she added.
