THE numbers are coming up for pubs in South Tyneside – with more bars adopting numerical names.

The latest to join the growing trend is The Address – No.5 in South Shields’ Market Place.

The former Tram Inn has undergone a major revamp after being acquired by businessman Khalid Hamodi.

The venue joins a recent trend of pubs with numbers in their name, including Nine Bar at Westoe – previously known as the Woodside Lodge – and No.3, the former Riverside pub at the Mill Dam in South Shields. Mr Hamodi, who formerly ran The Office pub in South Shields, said the image change was an attempt to give a “modern feel” to the bar – known in the past by a variety of names, including Rosie Malones and The Mermaid’s Tale.

He said: “The number is the actual address of the building in the Market Place, and five happens to also be the number of pubs I have had.

“We’re in a prominent location at the centre of the town and it really needed a facelift and a more modern feel.

“I wanted to get away from the traditional names for pubs – like The Queen Vic – hence the more up-to-date name.

“We’re also the last surviving pub in the Market Place, now the former City of Durham is a cafe, and the Commando and The Brigantine are gone. A restaurant will be open upstairs soon and that will serve traditional English food.”

The pub has live music at the weekend, karaoke nights and widespread TV sports coverage.

Mr Hamodi added: “We’ve only been open since the start of the month and the response has been very positive. We want to be at the heart of the market and attract locals and people coming over from North Shields on the ferry.”
