LIVE REVIEW
DOGS
Independent, Sunderland

LONDON five-piece Dogs released some of the finest pop/punk singles I've ever heard, and a first album of such startling quality it still ranks among my favourites.
Turn Against This Land contained anthems like London Bridge, Tarred And Feathered, Tuned To A Different Station, Donkey and Selfish Ways, which remain the backbone of their set.

They were joined in this 13-song show by more excellent tunes from l
ast year's second album Tall Stories From Under The Table.

This Stone Is A Bullet, Soldier On, Dirty Little Shop, Winston Smith and Little Pretenders were all performed with the professionalism you'd expect from a band that has paid its dues touring-wise.

I've seen Dogs 15 times, and they remain one of the best live bands I've seen, but this really felt like, to quote one of their songs, the end of an era.

It must be disheartening – having supported Paul Weller in major venues and having the Arctic Monkeys open for them – that they are without a major record label and still playing to fewer than 100 (albeit dedicated) fans in nightclubs.

There was an air of a doomed relationship about the whole proceedings.

With no new material and a performance that once would have guaranteed an adrenaline surge, it all felt a bit too flat.
