LIVE REVIEW
HOT CHIP
Newcastle University

A LOT has been said about Hot Chip's 'nerdy' appearance, and, OK, they don't look like the coolest of guys.
Falling somewhere in between art students and librarians, the band aren't going to win any fashion awards.

However, when if comes to music, they are the supermodels of the dance world.

Touring their excellent third album, Made In The Dark, the band sold out the university Bassment – the perfect setting for their pounding electro-fun and melodies.

From opening track Shake A Fist the five-piece stormed straight into their anthem And I Was A Boy From School, which was greeted by whoops of joy from the euphoric audience.

The band continued to push their new release, with Bendable Poseable, Touch Too Much, Wrestlers and excellent single Ready For the Floor all getting an airing before their breakthrough song Over And Over.

Hot Chip are more than your average dance act – intelligent and witty, they are very much a collective, with each member striving to produce superb and sometimes sublime music.

I'd heard from a friend that, as a live band, Hot Chip couldn't quite cut it.

Thankfully he was wrong, and they produced a tight, almost flawless set that never lost momentum.

Members took turns at switching instruments to blast out their powerful electro-pop, and Hot Chip are proof that substance wins over style every time.
