THE HOLLOWAYS
Newcastle University
(O2 Wireless Weekender)
THE band best known for the Top 30 hit Generator began their latest tour in Newcastle as part of the O2 Wireless Weekender festival.
And while the gig wasn't exactly a sell out, it's fair to say the crowd went home thoroughly entertained.
The Londoners' quirky brand of music has a calypso style to it, making the majority of their songs happy and uplifting.
And the crowd certainly reacted to it, dancing wildly and enjoying the rapport struck up with the band in such an intimate venue.
As well as now-familiar songs from their debut album So, This Is Great Britain? they showcased lots of new material.
Generator and Two Left Feet went down a storm, and the vibe was a joy to be a part of.
Their performance reminded me slightly of Madness – lively, silly and highly entertaining – but just lacking that certain something to turn them from promising indie prospects into the real deal.
Frontman Alfie Jackson was in fine vocal form, and the crowd took to his between-song banter, while guitarist and fiddler Rob Skipper was brilliant.
Every good band has one special member, and Rob is definitely The Holloways', with a slight air of unpredictability about him.
Their music is infectious, and, to quote a line from Generator, they "generate the music that makes you feel better".
The band clearly enjoy what they do, and if success was measured in terms of enthusiasm, then The Holloways couldn't fail.
