LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION
The Cluny, Newcastle

AS one third of the now-defunct Test Icicles, Dev Hynes was responsible for some of the best live shows of the last five years.
Thankfully, he still knows how to pull the live punches with his new band Lightspeed Champion.

Playing to a packed Cluny, Hynes played most songs of his well-received debut album Falling Off The Lavender Bridge, as well as tracks from his already written second album.

Highlights included Galaxy Of The Lost, Everyone I Know Is Listening To Crunk and the superb Midnight Surprise – which, despite being 10 minutes long, is one of those moments in life where you say "Wow, I'm pleased I saw that."

The key to the success of Lightspeed is the fact that it is the opposite end of the spectrum to Test Icicles. Every song is melodic and well crafted, with a simplistic beauty about them.

Sadly, this review can't do justice to the brilliance of the band.

Words on a page are one thing, but experiencing this band live is a must.

But it shall say two things: Hynes is without doubt one of the most talented people working in the music industry at the moment and as for Lightspeed Champion, the world could become a rather large oyster for them.
