THERE'S only been a handful of times over the past 30 years of reviewing gigs that I've come away with a feeling that the band I've just seen has greatness written all over them.
In recent years Maximo Park definitely hit that note, and these boys are another.

It was a gig I'd been eagerly anticipating for the past 12 months, since they upstaged the excellent Thrills in the same venue last year.

I thought Tiny Dancers were special then, and that was confirmed when they released their brilliant debut album Free School Milk last June.

It's an undiscovered classic, with every song on the 12-track CD a brilliant rock/pop track, with addictively catchy tunes; easily my album of the year.

Their highly-original sound is unquantifiable, other than it makes you want to dance and sing along.

So here they were again, out on the road for the first time in seven months, and of the 11-number set, only five songs had ever had a public airing.

Sun Goes Down, Hannah We Know, I Will Wait For You, Ashes And Diamonds, and the encore Bonfire Of The Night sounded magnificent.

However, the six new numbers – without exception – were fantastic.

From the opening song Breathe It In, through to Join The Club, Antelope, Come And Say Hello, the outstanding She Handles Diamonds, Let's Remember This Year and Everybody's Doing Alright, this was a gig bordering on perfect.

The vibes were great, and it was a privilege to witness such an outstanding group.

It's not a case of 'if' this Yorkshire outfit become a rock piece de resistance, it's 'when'.
