LIVE REVIEW
WE ARE SCIENTISTS
Northumbria University

THE main room at the university was a sell out for the Newcastle leg of We Are Scientists' Back In Style Tour.
Normally you would expect such a crowd to be full of committed fans and diehards.

However, apart from a hardcore of devotees at the front, this one seemed largely apathetic.

The band were far more confident than when I last saw them supporting The Editors, and they haven't lost any of their geeky charm.

They delivered a fantastic set, although at 80 minutes it was a bit short by today's standards.

It did seem as if some of the crowd had only heard new album Brain Thrust Mastery, and not the infinitely-superior debut In Love And Squalor.

Frontman Keith Murray and bassist Chris Cain play off each other like a comedy double act, although the witty banter was spoilt somewhat by the poor sound, which rendered their on-stage chat almost inaudible at times.

New member Max Hunt fits in quite nicely and shifts easily from keyboards to guitars, while the un-introduced drummer was an adequate replacement for the recently exited Michael Tapper.

Luckily the sound problems didn't affect the music as We Are Scientists are extremely capable musicians, and their jagged guitars and rhythmic drums shone through on tracks like Nobody Move, Nobody Gets Hurt and It's A Hit.

There were no surprises in the set, with standout tracks Ghouls, Let's See It and the single After Hours from the new album nestling nicely alongside Cash Cow, Textbook and The Great Escape from the first one.

If you like quirky, fast-paced, pop punk then We Are Scientists are a band you should download, but to truly appreciate them you really ought to see them live.
