TERRY Hudson, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, broke two records on his way to four gold medals in the North Eastern Veterans Association's Track and Field Championships at Monkton Stadium on Saturday.
Hudson, who has just moved into the over-60 category, heaved the hammer 36.66m and added 3.58m to the old mark.
He achieved a distance of 11.83m in the shot an improvement of 33cm on the previous standard.
A best javelin throw of 31.40m and an
other winning effort of 39.29m in the discus completed his quartet of trophies.
Don Butler was also in dominating form for the Jarrow club in the over-65 section as he collected four titles.
Butler was clear in the opening 300m hurdles in 51.7 and completed a sprint treble with wins in the 100m in 15.0 and 200m with 31.7, before taking first place in the long jump with 3.98m.
Mike Jones, from South Shields Harriers, gained a runaway victory in the over-40 men's 5000m.
Jones led from the gun on the 12.5 laps, coming home alone in 17:45.6.
Ed Wilson, also from the Shields club, finished fourth in a competitive over-55 contest in 20:17, and Frank Strand was first in the over-65 race in 22:57.2.
Malcolm Stephenson won the over-65 800m in 3:20.7 and was second in the 1500m in 6:27.5.
Jarrow's Philip McCluskey lost out by inches in the over-40 200m, crossing the line with Martin Wilson, of Hartlepool Burn Road, who gained the verdict with both athletes awarded the same time of 26.2.
McCluskey seemed set to win the 400m leading into the final five metres, but Phil Jones of Wallsend swooped late to win in 57.2 with McCluskey only a tenth of a second behind. Jarrow's Dave Robertson was fifth in 59.7.
McCluskey had to settle for silver yet again with 12.6 in the 100m.
Robinson was second in the long jump with 4.67m, only nine centimetres behind Dave Robertson of North Shields.
Paul Young, from Middlesbrough, won the javelin with 29:30m, with Robinson second on 27:20m.
South Shields Harriers won the team bronze medals in the Chevie Chase 20 miles fell race on Saturday.
In heavy conditions through peat bogs on a course over the Cheviot Hills from Wooler, Keith Mackey finished 25th in four hours seven minutes in a field of 271.
Peter Rooney was 34th in 4:14, with Kevin Ayres 36th in 4:16 and Ed Haley 42nd in 4:21 as Claremont were second, 21 points ahead of Shields with Nunthorpe Fell Club first.
Alan Kirkbride, from Allenheads, retained his title in 3:17.
