JARROVIANS' second league game of the season saw them take the short trip to South Shields to face Westoe.
Playing at Oakleigh Gardens, a pitch with more slopes on it than the Lake District, Jarrow began as they had finished last week's game against Barnard Castle, with tremendous running from forwards and centres.
In the first 20 minutes debutant cent
re Barry Walker, ably supported by Davey Johnson, made inroads into the home side's defence, and was unfortunate not to score.
Another new boy, Martin Bengston, playing his first game on the wing, showed excellent potential, with some strong tackling and running.
Westoe quickly realised they had a game on their hands, and began to use their considerable experience and strength, drawing first blood with a converted try.
Jarrovians continued to attack, but some bad luck, coupled with handling errors, saw their efforts go unrewarded.
Things got harder as Davey Johnson took the 10-minute walk of shame for an innocuous challenge, and Westoe took advantage, scoring another try before half-time.
Unfortunately for Jarrovians two injuries early in the second half took their toll.
Gnarled hooker Davey Winthrop took a knock to his knee, and Walker also had to retire.
The home side gathered all their resolve and threw everything at the Jarrowmen.
Rewarded with a third try Westoe, took the sting out the tail of brave Jarrow, and a fourth was the final nail in the visitors' coffin.
The scoreline, at 24-0, wasn't really a true reflection of what had been a hugely entertaining game.
It was a game that had it all, including two more cards, which left both teams with 14 players as the match reached its conclusion.
Bruce Woodhouse, Olly Douthwaite and brothers Lewis and Paul Hagan, who also kicked two conversions, were Westoe's try scorers.
