A GRIEVING South Tyneside mum has backed a tough new crackdown on knife crime launched in the region today by Northumbria Police.
The campaign is in response to growing public concerns over the knife-carrying culture which has led to a spate of deaths among youngsters in towns and cities across the UK.
Susanne Hilton’s son Glen was murdered two years ago on his 16th birthday in East Avenue, South Shields, as he celebrated getting his GCSE results.
The 35-year-old mum is supporting the latest campaign – Taking Knives Off Your Streets – which calls for a ban on carrying all pointed weapons, including knives, in public places, with mandatory prison sentences for offenders.
There will also be a knife amnesty, stop and search operations in hot spot areas, and officers visiting schools to raise awareness.
A senior police chief said the initiative follows on from the success of the Gazette’s own Knives Ruin Lives campaign, calling for an automatic ban for anyone caught carrying a knife.
