DAMAGE running into hundreds of pounds was caused when vandals attacked cars in several parts of Hebburn.
Police are appealing for information after more than 20 vehicles were scratched in Canning Street, Quarry Road and Toner Avenue.
Car owners in Canning Street believe the attacks are linked to youths congregating in nearby Carr Ellison Park.
Win
g mirrors and car aerials were ripped off in the street during attacks earlier this year.
A Rover MG sports car, belonging to waiter Andy Atherton, had its body work scratched in the latest incident, which happened between late last Thursday and the early hours of Good Friday.
The 21-year-old today said: "They scratched the side of my car and it will probably cost more than £100 to put right.
"There have been problems with attacks on cars in the past and there are always kids hanging about the park, just across the road."
Acting Inspector Ian Cutty, for South Tyneside police, said: "We believe some kind of sharp instrument was used to scratch the body work of these cars.
"This seemed to be a random, one-off incident, which is being treated as criminal damage, and we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward."
Another Canning Street resident said: "Half-a-dozen people had wing mirrors ripped off their cars about six weeks ago.
"There are always kids climbing over the fence at night from the park and we believe they may have been responsible.
"They say some of the kids do the damage while riding around on their bikes.
"Thankfully, I keep my car in the garage, but I know cars were attacked over quite a wide area of Hebburn."
Anyone with information about last week's car attacks should South Tyneside police on 0845 604 3043.
