AN alcoholic who has been sleeping rough got caught up in a row with police.
Police approached George Hallway, 38, in Hebburn's Carr-Ellison Park on Sunday afternoon, South Tyneside Magistrates heard yesterday.

Hallway was asleep on the bench, and there were two cider bottles beside him.

When officers approached him and asked him to sit up, he refused and used abusive language, the court heard.

He was warned to stop swearing, as there were children and families in the park.

But when he refused to co-operate he was arrested and spent Sunday night in a police cell.

Hallway admitted a charge of drunk and disorderly behaviour, and was fined £40, with £50 costs.

Val Bell, defending, said: "Mr Hallway is an alcoholic who has been sleeping rough for a number of weeks.

"He was drunk in the park and fell asleep. He can't recall much of what happened as he was intoxicated."
