Several top council bosses departed the authority in 2008, among them assistant chief executive Diane Wood, executive director of regeneration and resources David Slater, and executive director of children and young people services Kym Bromley-Derry.

Now the latest figure to leave is Caroline Thomas, head of adult services.

She has left by "mutual agreement", according to Irene Lucas, the chief executive of the council.

In an e-mail sent to borough councillors and seen by the Gazette, Mrs Lucas thanked Mrs Thomas for her efforts.

She says: "I know that you will want to join with me in thanking Caroline for her contribution to supporting and improving adult services within South Tyneside, and wish her well for the future.

"Caroline wanted colleagues to know that she has very much enjoyed working with South Tyneside through both challenges and successes."

Mrs Lucas said "robust interim arrangements" had been put in place until the post is advertised and filled in the coming weeks.

She adds: "Every step has been taken to ensure the service continues to be delivered to the highest standards for residents and members.

"The interim arrangements will be effective immediately.

"Two senior assistant heads of service will report directly to the executive director neighbourhood services."

Nobody was available from South Tyneside Council to comment.
