CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save St Bede's RC Primary School say they're not happy with the latest proposal.

Under the Tops plans, the school in Harold Street, Jarrow, was earmarked for closure.

But that decision has now been deferred until the autumn.

Instead, the Tops team is looking at a proposal to co-locate St Bede's RC with Jarrow Cross C of E Primary and Clervaux Nursery, all at Jarrow Cross's Borough Road site.

However, Lynn Smith, one of the campaigners fighting to save St Bede's, said: "I'm quite disappointed with the suggestion the school should be rebuilt elsewhere.

"Really, I think the council can still expect a fight on its hands. I'm amazed they want to close St Bede's."

Mrs Smith, of Wansbeck Road, Jarrow, added: "Instead of talking about 'state-of-the-art' schools, they should be talking about improving the facilities we have.

"I believe our campaign has been partly successful, because the council is not talking about simply closing St Bede's, but we will keep on fighting."
