BOOKWORMS in South Tyneside have helped a supermarket raise cash for charity.

Asda in Ocean Road, South Shields, held a book sale to generate funds for the Meningitis Trust and buy toys for youngsters in Ward 12 at South Tyneside District Hospital.

More than £200 was raised by kind customers buying the books, and the Asda Foundation donated a further £150.

The event took place after canteen worker Chris Burn's grand-daughter Ellie Burn, three, received treatment for the disease.

Mavis Maughan, events co-ordinator, added "We thought it would be good to raise money for these two causes because they helped out one of our colleagues.

"We're very grateful to our customers who came along and supported us during the event."
