HOMEOWNERS are being urged to take extra precautions to protect their properties from burglars now the dark nights are here.
The warning comes after the clocks went back last month, giving thieves the chance to strike.
Figures released by Halifax Home Insurance reveal a 20 per cent rise in the number of burglaries throughout the winter months.
However, Alex Wilkinson, crime prevention officer with South Tyneside Area Command, said there are steps residents can take to protect their homes.
She said: "Darker nights can often encourage opportunist thieves, however, taking simple precautions like locking all doors and windows, even if you're leaving your home for only a few minutes, can make a real difference to protecting your property.
"Other easy and inexpensive tips include telling your neighbours if you are away for a few days, or buying a timer switch which will turn on lights inside your home.
"Mark valuables so if they are stolen and later found, you can be reunited with them, and always report any suspicious activity to police.
"A break-in can cause misery and inconvenience to householders. Any steps that can be taken to cut crime will be time and money well spent."
Meanwhile, forgetful homeowners are also running the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
A national survey carried out by the Newcastle Building Society revealed 11 per cent of homeowners forget to lock their doors on a regular basis when they go out.
People are also leaving the curtains or blinds open and putting their possessions on display; leaving the house without locking the windows, and without setting the burglar alarm.
