Cheap school uniform calls by MP

STEPHEN Hughes is backing a campaign to reduce VAT on school uniforms.
The Labour MEP for North East England is supporting the Schoolwear Association's efforts to have the tax cut to five per cent on items displaying a prominent badge or logo.
VAT is zero-rated in the UK on items of children's clothing, but this is defined as someone aged 13 years or younger.
As a result, many parents pay 17.5 per cent VAT on uniforms if they are the size of an average 14, 15 or 16-year-old, or if they are taller than the average 13-year-old.
If implemented, the campaign would save parents up to £20 per uniform.
The European Commission is undertaking a review to amend a directive that outlines which goods and services are eligible to have a reduced VAT rate in member states.
Mr Hughes said: "I am supporting the campaign to help families save hard-earned money on school uniforms."
