Council praised for diversity work

COUNCIL bosses have been praised for their equality and diversity work by Government inspectors.
South Tyneside Council has reached level three of the Equality Standard, which recognises the importance of fair and equal treatment in local government services and employment.
It also measures how well local authorities use age, disability, gender, race, faith or belief, or sexual orientation, into policy making, service delivery and employment practices.
There are five different levels and council bosses have now pledged to reach the next stage.
During a recent on-site inspection, the assessors met with council members, officers, partners and community representatives, and commended them for their enthusiasm and commitment to equality and diversity.
The assessors also praised the council for its strong leadership, listening to and involving the community, using creative and innovative ways to reach people and in ensuring that equality and diversity is considered in 'everything we do'.
Coun Bill Brady, lead member for equality and diversity, said: "This award and the feedback we've received from the inspectors show we really are making a positive difference to people's lives.
"It proves we are working to make sure all our services meet the needs of our communities. We are also identifying and removing barriers which may create disadvantage and discrimination.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked hard to make this happen.
"We don't plan to stop here, we're aiming to get to level four next and make an even bigger difference."
