A CUSTOMER was left battered and bruised after being attacked by a couple at a social club.
Christopher Munro threw his drink and punched Alan Kirton in the face after a closing-time row broke out at Hebburn Legion on March 8.
Newcastle Crown Court yesterday heard as the attack went on, Munro's then girlfriend, who was not named in court
, joined in the fracas by kicking out, then throwing a glass and a box of dominoes while Mr Kirton was on the floor.
She was cautioned by police for a public order offence.
Mr Kirton was taken to hospital with a swollen cheek, bruised eyelids, swollen lips and damaged nose.
Munro, 28, of Lindisfarne Road, Hebburn, told police he had lashed out in self-defence because of Mr Kirton's "aggressive manner" on the night.
He later admitted assault causing bodily harm.
Judge Brian Forster sentenced Munro to a six-week community order with a night-time curfew.
He was ordered to pay £400 compensation and £200 costs.
The judge told him: "This is just the type of unpleasant situation other people in clubs or pubs would hate.
"People go out for a good time, they do not want it spoiled by seeing unpleasant, nasty attacks."
Judge Forster said references had described Murno as a "good, decent person".
The judge added: "I am willing to approach this on the basis you were acting out of character."
John Wilkinson, defending, said Munro is in the process of joining the Army.
Speaking after the case, vice- chairman of the club Maxie Walsh said: "It was a nasty attack on a person who was minding his own business.
"Alan is a quiet lad and is known by everyone, and we are all sorry for what happened."
