A WOMAN who founded a group for ethnic minorities in her living room has been nominated for a Pride of South Tyneside award.
When Vimla Storey first came to England from India and started a family, she suddenly felt very lonely and vulnerable, as her husband was away at sea.
So she and her friends, who were in a similar situation, started meeting for coffee in her home.
As the word got out and the group started to get bigger, they managed to get a small base in Flagg Court, South Shields.
Apna Ghar, meaning 'our house', is now based in Ocean Road, South Shields, and last year celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Surjah Hunter, former co-ordinator and community health development officer at Apna Ghar, has nominated Mrs Storey for Role Model of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards.
She said: "She is an inspiration to all women, especially those from the black and minority ethnic community.
"Because of her commitment and forward thinking, Apna has created many opportunities for BME women.
"For many years, Vimla gave her time voluntarily, before funding was sought."
Apna Ghar, which employs 13 staff and experienced sessional tutors, runs a range of courses, from cooking to English, and has a crèche.
Other services include interpreting and translation, luncheon clubs, youth groups, holistic therapy and health advice.
Mrs Hunter added: "Vimla retired in 2003, but still continues to work as a volunteer, and her input into the organisation is invaluable.
"My personal experience through Vimla was to aspire to become as dedicated and as selfless as she is."
Mrs Storey, who is in her 70s, said she was "very happy" to be nominated.
* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

The closing date has now passed for nominations.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Customs House on Thursday, July 10.
