TWO thousand tonnes of hay has gone up in smoke in a South Tyneside field.
A fire broke out at a field in Marsden Avenue, Whitburn, yesterday, at about 11am.

It took fire crews from Fulwell and Gateshead almost three hours to tackle the blaze.

The hay was in an open field, but produced a lot of smoke, which spread due to coastal winds.

A fire brigade spokesman from Fulwell said: "There was no real danger of the fire spreading, it just proved difficult to put out because it smouldered a lot."
