AN armed raider who demanded cash from a terrified shop worker fled empty-handed after being chased by a customer.
The have-a-go hero sprung into action after a man, armed with a hammer, demanded cash from a woman behind the counter at Marine Stores in Marine Approach, South Shields.

The raider fled empty-handed, and was chased down the road towards Wharton Street and Westoe Road by the customer.

The incident happened about 12.30pm yesterday. Police say the shop worker was not injured, but was left shaken by her ordeal.

Detectives are appealing for the customer and anyone with information on the attempted robbery to come forward.

The suspect was in his late 30s to 40s, and was wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
