ELDERLY residents will feel safer in their homes following the completion of a new wall scheme in Jarrow.

Concerns were raised about the poor condition of some walls and fences at the back of bungalows in York Street.

This prompted Primrose ward councillors Jim Perry, Emma Lewell and Barrie Scorer to press for cash through Jarrow community area forum.

Work is now under way on the creation of new walls, which have been welcomed by residents.

Married couple Muriel and Harry Hymers, who have lived in York Street for 10 years, say the scheme will improve the overall look of their properties.

Mrs Hymers, 81, said: "I think the new walls and fences will give a uniformity of design, because it was a bit of a mess previously, with some of the fences rotting.

"Our only concern at the minute is not being able to put our bins out, because the work is still under way, but I'm sure the scheme will look great in the end."

Contractors have spent several weeks creating new brick walls, which will eventually be topped off with timber fencing.

Coun Perry said: "I think this scheme will improve the overall appearance of that end of York Street.

"I have spoken to several residents and they have welcomed the work, which will improve security in the bungalows."

The scheme is only being completed in the section of York Street which falls within the Primrose ward.

Coun Barrie Scorer said: "The three ward members put the scheme forward for finance, as a way of providing extra security for the bungalows.

"Some of the wooden fencing was rotten and needed to be replaced, and repair after repair was being carried out.

"The scheme has been done in stages, because we had to allow the cement to dry with the walls, before starting with the fencing.

"But we hope the work will be completed in the near future."
