FIVE homes had to be evacuated today after a car crashed into a flat in Jarrow.
A 69-year-old man lost control of his car, which ploughed through a fence and into the downstairs property in Ely Way, Fellgate, just before 11am.

Both the driver and his wife escaped injury, and luckily there was no one in the flat.

However, a gas main was ruptured, and emergency gas engineers and firefighters were called to deal with the leak.

Police put up a cordon, and the residents were evacuated to nearby Primrose Community Centre.

At just after 1pm firefighters confirmed the leak had been secured, as well as the structure of the property,.

All residents - apart from the occupant of the damaged flat - were able to return to their homes.
