Knife suspect quizzed after shop raid

A MAN has been arrested by police after allegedly brandishing a knife during a raid at a South Shields store.
Police were called to a newsagents in Green Lane, South Shields, at 12.45pm today following reports of a disturbance there.

It is claimed a window was broken during a disturbance at the shop.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said a man had been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated damage, and is currently helping police with their inquiries.

The arrest comes just a day after police on South Tyneside launched a crackdown on knife crime in the borough.

Dubbed 'Taking knives off your streets' the police campaign calls for mandatory jail sentences for people caught carrying blades in public.
