EVERYTHING that passes through Second Time Around has been recycled by owner Lindsey Whiting.

The 47-year-old, from Salmon Street, South Shields, opened the shop 14 months ago – and is loving every minute.

There's a very green feel to the business, in Westoe Road, South Shields.

The mother-of-two sells her own paintings in the shop, and even the paint she uses to brush on to the recycled paper is second-hand.

And the diverse range of customers can be seen leaving with their items in an re-used carrier bag.

Ms Whiting has been nominated for Role Model of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards by customer Tessa Lowe, from Wharton Street, South Shields.

She said: "She is an example of someone who, later on in life, has had the vision and courage to realise a dream.

"The result of this risk is a small business, which is excellent for the environment, as everything in the shop is recycled.

"It affords the opportunity to people to have lovely, unusual things, which they might otherwise not be able to have.

"More importantly, Lindsey's warmth and personality, and her genuine interest in people, means that her small shop has become something of a community centre.

"Everyone goes out feeling immeasurably better than they did when they arrived, whether they buy a little something or not!

"Lindsey's decision to 'go for it' and follow through her vision at a time of life when many women have given up on their potential, is a role model for so many.

"She doesn't wish to be rich, she just wants to be happy."

Ms Whiting was certainly happy to be nominated for the award.
She said: "I'm chuffed to bits. It's lovely to feel appreciated."

* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

Ten awards are up for grabs – Carer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Sporting Excellence, Top Achiever, Child of Courage, Good Friend/Neighbour, Role Model of the Year, Young Performer(s) of the Year and a Judges' Special Award.

The closing date has now passed for nominations.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Customs House on Thursday, July 10.
