DESPITE his historic pedigree Sebastian's a down-to-earth, friendly dog looking for a new home.

The five-year-old saluki greyhound was found tied up outside Farringdon police station in Sunderland six weeks ago, and has been at West Hall Kennels, Cleadon, ever since.

The saluki is believed to be the oldest-known breed of domesticated dog.

As a pure breed type, its history can be traced back almost 7,000 years.

Kennels manager Sarah Wilkinson said: "Dogs like Sebastian have a bad reputation because people think that they need lots of exercise and looking after.

"In fact, Sebastian would be a very easy dog to own, and actually only needs a short burst of exercise for about half an hour a day.

"He happily spends the rest of his time curled up next to a warm radiator.

"He's got a lovely regal-looking face and has a great personality.

"We think he used to be a working dog before he came to the kennels, and now he's ready to retire into a loving home."

Sebastian would suit a family with older children, and while he happily lives with bitches, he does not like to be around male dogs or other animals.

To re-home Sebastian or any of the other dogs at the kennels, call 529 2369.
