MEMBERS of a South Shields-based Boys Brigade group received a cash boost during a special reception with the Mayor of South Tyneside.

All three sections of the Boys Brigade 15th South Shields Company – Anchor Boys, Junior Section and Company Section – met the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Coun John Anglin and his wife Chris, on a visit to South Shields Town Hall.

The Mayor presented the group with a cheque for more than £17,000 from the Youth Opportunity Fund, which will go towards the refurbishment of the group's meeting hall at the Bethesda Free Church in Victoria Road, Laygate.

The Mayor said: "It was lovely to hear about the various activities the Boys Brigade are involved with in the local community."

Company Captain Alan Greener said: "We were delighted to visit the Town Hall, and thrilled with the substantial grant."
