STAR-in-the-making Michelle Smith has landed a scholarship at one of the country's most prestigious theatre schools.

The 15-year-old will start Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, Surrey – which has churned out theatre stars such as West End actress Ruthie Henshall and pop artists including Spice Girl Victoria Beckham – in September.

The St Wilfrid's RC College pupil, who is studying for her GCSEs, had already landed a scholarship at Bird College in Kent and a place at Laine.

But the youngster, from Meldon Avenue, South Shields, had to go through another gruelling audition to secure her scholarship at Laine.

The singer, dancer and actress received a letter to say she had been successful because of her 'high standard of work and potential'.

She said: "I still can't believe what I have achieved by receiving two scholarships, and can't wait for September to start at Laine.

"When I received my letter about Laine I cried, as I had wanted this scholarship place so much."

Mum Linda said: "Michelle has decided to take the scholarship at Laine rather than Bird, as she felt that it was the right place for her to continue her training

"Michelle's dad Michael and I, and her brother Andrew, are all extremely proud of her, but she is going to be a big miss around the house.

"It's going to be like losing a daughter and a best friend at the same time."

Michelle attends Valerie Shepherd Dance Academy and is taught by
both Mrs Shepherd and Jackie Rutherford. She also attends Kathleen Burdon School of Dance for ballet lessons.

Gaining the scholarship came as no surprise to Mrs Shepherd, who has taught her since she was aged two.

She said: "We always knew she was going to go far. She is such a talent/ She can sing, dance and act – everything a college would be glad to have.

"She has worked so hard and now she is reaping the benefits.

"We are dreading her leaving though. She will be missed."
