Miliband condemns 'callous' Burmese regime

SOUTH Shields MP David Miliband has condemned the "callous disregard" of the Burmese regime for the well-being of its people.
More than 200,000 people are thought to be missing or dead following last week's cyclone, and the survivors face disease, thirst and starvation.
Foreigh Secretary Mr Miliband told the Commons yesterday that the UK is ready to support "any and all" UN action to help the people of Burma.
Asked later if this could include invoking the "responsibility to protect" doctrine which allows the use of military force to stop crimes against humanity, he told the BBC: "It certainly could and we have been absolutely clear in New York over the last 12 days that all instruments of the UN should be available."
He warned however, that any attempt to send in aid convoys with military escorts would not be easy, as Burma has 400,000 troops in uniform.
