JUBILANT staff were today celebrating after plans to close a Jarrow nursery were ditched.
Clervaux Nursery was expected to shut and its pupils moved to a new site at Jarrow Cross C of E Primary in Borough Road, under a shake-up of surplus places in South Tyneside schools.

But the nursery in Clervaux Terrace – which this week received an "outstanding" Ofsted report – was given a reprieve by education chiefs at a meeting yesterday.

Acting headteacher Ann Stevens said: "I'm still pinching myself, to make sure I'm not dreaming."

The fate of 13 borough schools was also considered by the council's Cabinet yesterday.
