A PENSIONER made a desperate dash to get home after his electric wheelchair caught fire.

An electrical fault sparked the blaze while the elderly man was in the wheelchair in Victoria Road, South Shields, at about 9.30am yesterday.

Firefighters, from South Shields, were called to the scene to put out the fire, but when they arrived the man had already headed home to Newmarket Street, with his wheelchair still ablaze.

John Winter crew manager said: "We got the call from Victoria Road, but when we got there the man was not there.

"Because he was on the move, we were trying to get in touch with him.

"We eventually caught up with him in Newmarket Walk, where we put the fire out and made it electrically safe.

"The man wasn't injured, just more worried about getting home before his wheelchair broke down."

Were you involved in the wheelchair blaze? If so, call the newsdesk on 427 4858.
