A MAN hurled abuse at an off-duty police officer in a supermarket before challenging him to a fight.
Sean McAlindon, 20, approached Clark Graham while he was shopping at Morrison's in Jarrow with his mother and baby daughter on March 18.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Mr Graham tried and failed to get McAlindon to calm down.

Prosecutor Simon Worth told the court: "Mr Graham's mum was a neighbour of the defendant, and there had been problems in the past.

"The defendant made a remark of an abusive nature, and Mr Graham did not want his mother and daughter to hear the language used.

"The victim asked the defendant to calm down, but he was aggressive and said to Mr Graham 'outside, now'."

McAlindon, of Tynemouth Road, Jarrow, admitted a public order offence.

Mr Recorder Ben Nolan sentenced him to a community order for nine months with supervision, and 50 hours' unpaid work.

Defence barrister Gavin Doig said McAlindon has found work in Liverpool which he hopes to start in the next fortnight.
