JARROW MP Stephen Hepburn has pressed Prime Minister Gordon Brown for action on asbestos payouts.

Mr Hepburn and fellow campaigning MPs met with the PM this week to put the case for restoring compensation for those with pleural plaques.

People with the condition, which can trigger the fatal disease, mesothelioma, were robbed of compensation after a Law Lords' ruling in 2007.

Mr Hepburn said: "We had a constructive and detailed discussion with the Prime Minister about the need to reinstate compensation for those with pleural plaques, and other measures to support them.

"We will reconvene the meeting with the PM next week, who is in no doubt about the depth of feeling in former industrial and mining areas."

Pleural plaques are caused by exposure to asbestos fibres and result in scarring of the lung tissue, plus breathlessness, stress and anxiety.
