THE construction of South Tyneside's new register office has reached a milestone with the laying of the last roof panel.

Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Tracey Dixon, and deputy leader, Coun Iain Malcolm, performed the 'topping out' ceremony for the building, which is due to open in late autumn.

The purpose-built complex in Broughton Road, South Shields, is next to the town hall and will be equipped with a ceremony room for up to 80 guests, a bride/civil partner's room, a garden room for smaller ceremonies and a south-facing garden for photographs.

Coun Dixon said: "The building will be of direct benefit to all the residents of the borough, providing excellent facilities for the disabled, people registering births and deaths, and those wanting a lovely setting for their wedding."

Coun Malcolm added: "The new building will replace our present registration facilities in Barrington Street, which are not adequate for the needs of the service."
