Geordie actor Tim Healy met South Shields cancer survivor Michael Balfour at St James's Park yesterday.
Michael, a dedicated Sunderland fan, entered rival territory to unveil the 20 semi-finalists he helped choose for the region's biggest X Factor-style music contest.

Music Means Life gives up-and-coming artists the chance to perform on stage, with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT).

The money will be spent on the £1.9m rebuild of the TCT unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where Michael, 16, was treated for a rare form of nasal cancer two years ago.

Now in remission, his family are a driving force behind fundraising for the new unit.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! star Healy said: "It's great to see the fortunate teenagers giving something back to those who aren't so fortunate."

* Four acts from South Tyneside made the final cut. Find out who they are in tomorrow's Gazette.
