SOUTH Shields-born film director Sir Ridley Scott has sent a message of congratulations to Newcastle's newly reopened Tyneside Cinema.
Sir Ridley spoke to scores of guests via a cinema screen at a special VIP event yesterday to celebrate the cinema's new lease of life.

The man behind box office hits including Alien and Gladiator is the great-nephew of the creator of the cinema, Dixon Scott.

The historic picture house, the last purpose-built newsreel cinema in the country still in use, was given a £7m boost by the Heritage Lottery Fund North East to help cover the cost of its revamp.

It has been transformed into a venue for both watching films and making them.
