WEARSIDERS wrapped up to welcome the festive season with some of the city's biggest sporting stars.
Black Cat players Djibril Cisse and Pascal Chimbonda and Olympic boxer Tony Jeffries were given a hero's welcome when they flicked the switch to turn on Sunderland's Christmas lights.

About 5,000 people braved the cold to join in the festive fun at the civic centre.

Djibril Cisse, who stayed behind to sign autographs, said: "It's been good, but a bit chilly."

Tony Jeffries added: "I remember coming down here when I was little, so I was honoured to do it."
n In Newcastle, cooking duo The Hairy Bikers, Dave Myers and Simon King, turned on the city lights.
