TEACHERS from a South Tyneside school are flying to the US today to take part in a prestigious international conference.
Deputy headteacher Chris Braybrook and head of technology Alan Bates, from Harton Technology College in South Shields, will discuss the future of learning with education experts from all over the world.
The four-day conference, in Atlanta, Georgia,
will concentrate on "setting an international vision for schools for the 21st century". The school, in Lisle Road, is already recognised as a specialist school and the trip is part of its involvement with Creative Partnerships North and South Tyneside.
Ms Braybrook said: "Part of the research that is going on in education is looking at creating more independent learning and to give pupils an even bigger thirst for knowledge.
"That is exactly the kind of issue this conference will be looking at."
The conference has been organised by the International Network for Educational Transformation and among the many speakers at the event will be Bernice Alston, deputy chief education officer at NASA, and Dr Barry Adams, who works within the education department at Apple.
Leading educationalists from across the UK and Australia will be in attendance at the event, entitled Developing A New Concept Of Schooling for 2020.
It is hoped it will result in some major progress in looking at virtual and independent learning.
"It is wonderful to have this opportunity to go," added Ms Braybrook.
"We are all looking at ways to develop independent learning, to give young people the tools to really think about education for life."
