Three hurt in ambulance smash

AN ambulance was taken out of service after colliding with a car on a busy dual carriageway in South Shields.
Police were forced to partially close one lane, either side of the John Reid Road at its junction with South Tyneside District Hospital, yesterday after a collision between an ambulance and a Ford Fiesta at about 12.45pm.

A female driver and two ambulance crew members suffered whiplash and were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital.

The ambulance, which was not carrying anyone, was taken out of service after suffering extensive damage.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service, said: "An ambulance was involved in a road traffic collision after leaving South Tyneside District Hospital."

The crew were picked up by another ambulance and taken to the hospital.

"The ambulance was taken off the road due to extensive damage. Two crew members suffered whiplash."
