£6,000 worth of timber stolen from a South Tyneside industrial estate has been recovered - but the lorry it was on has gone.

Thieves forced their way into MC Southern based at Church Bank Sawmills, Jarrow, and stole the 17-ton lorry from the yard.

The theft was discovered by a driver on Tuesday after he went to pick up the lorry which had been destined for Lancashire.

The timber was later found dumped in an industrial estate in Berwick.

Director Mark Lowis said: "We have been lucky the timber has been recovered. We sent one of our drivers along to pick it up.

"The lorry is still out there, we think it is probably heading up to Scotland.

"We wouldn't like to put a figure on the lorry as it was not a new vehicle."

Orders which had to be put back due to the theft have now been fulfilled by the firm.

It is thought the thieves struck at the site between 4.30pm on Friday and 4.50am on Tuesday.

The lorry, registration W533 RBB, is described as red with a green stripe across the middle with the words MC Southern printed on it.
